Paying Road tax in Pune

Writing this blog just to help out others who want to pay the 2 wheeler road tax in Pune. I didn't vouch for any agent so had tough time today at the RTO (Near Sangam bridge) ...the main RTO in Pune. My vehicle, Pulsar 150 cc, is Karnataka registered and I wanted to pay only the Road tax i.e my vehicle number will still be Karnataka's.
Now to start with the documents required:
1) RC Book
2) Driving License
3) Active vehicle insurance
4) Original invoice...this is used to compute the Road tax amount
5) PUC slip
6) 1 plain paper
7) Local proof...not compulsory

In case of "change of registration" u need to have NOC of vehicle previous registration. It takes some days before u r handed over the new number.

Procedure:
Get the xerox copy of all the above mentioned documents (if u haven't, there's a xerox shop in the RTO compound) and collect a FT document from a store(its free of cost) just outside the main RTO building. There will dozens of agents asking u to fill the form on ur behalf...just ignore them..the form is very simple to fill...just copy the details from ur RC book.(The form is in English).
After u have copied the details on the FT form from ur RC book, just write an application on the plain paper to the Regional officer RTO (Mr. Nikam) asking him to approve ur case to file road tax. Take the completed FT form and application to Mr. Nikam's office (enter RTO main building and take the 1st right...u'll see his office and name). He will sign on the form saying "Accept Tax". After this is done rush to the lady at the extreme corner on left..this lady will look at the invoice and compute the road tax amount on the FT form. Next, rush to another lady, Mrs Korse, this lady will have a short look at the form and just sign it and will ask u to join the queue to pay the road tax (The amount will be the one computed by the lady earlier). This is the place I got messed up big time...got in the wrong queue...the one mentioned by the Mrs Korse was wrong...I wasted around 2 hrs in the wrong line.Lines are not that big but you have agents in the line with 1o cases at a time...and some back door entries...but can't help but wait :(
Get into the line for window 23...this is the one accepting road tax for outside vehicles. After some wait and patience u'll finally get ur receipt indicating that ur vehicle has paid the Maharashtra road tax :)

The help window won't be of much help so please don't waste much time there. If you face any troublesome issue at the Office ...Mr. Nikam is the best person to contact..he sure helps :)
All the best and after this task is completed ...rip away ur bike in Pune's streets.

  4. Hi Praveen,

Are you sure that we dont need Local address proof for paying just Road Tax.

Also is there any Affidavit that needs to be submitted as Agent was asking Rs. 200 for this from me?

  5. Hey Praveen..

Thanks for the blog, I'm really irritated from the pune police, i have got my activa from bangalore, they have done open robbery from me twice.. once 500 and then 600.. This weekend i'll pay the road tax.

Hope i'll be able to do it one day!!

    Cheers!

  8. Hey Praveen... thanks for this awesome blog. i have two questions:
I got my bike from Hyderabad to Pune along with the NOC not realizing that only paying the road tax here would work. Now is it required for me to re-gister my vehicle?
If yes then do I still follow the same process as mentioned above?
How much is the road tax for pulsar 180? any idea?

  9. Guys.. really sorry that I was away and not able to get back to you on time..may be google needs to come up with a notification mail being sent if the blogger gets a comment :)

    @Praveen: You have 2 options.
    1) You can get your Bike re-register in Pune. For this you'll also need NOC which I believe you already have. In this case, you'll get a new MH number for ur bike. This costs a little higher than the option 2.
    2) The FT Form allows you to pay the road tax and continue with the same number. This should be a good option if you want to take back ur bike to Hyd after few yrs in Pune.
The road tax depends upon the invoice presented by you. The cost price of vehicle and depreciation based on number of years passed. It should be around 2-3k but not exactly sure.

  10. Thanks Praveen,

I visit RTO Office before 1 week and i really got confused between Registration and Road Tax. Then i ask to 2 Agent and one of the agent advice me to only pay Road Tax. When i go to Mr. Nikam's office for taking sign on FT Form he ask me when i bring the 2 wheeler in pune, When i say in last month he ask me for proof but i don't have any proof so he ask me to brint company's joining letter, I told him i have registred copy of house rent agreement but don't know why he ask for company's joining letter. Now tomorrow i will go there with above mention document and follow the procedure you mention.

I have also paid 2 times bribe to trafic police @ Mundwa Crocessing (between Nagar to Hadapser bypass). Traffic police of Pune are really very bad. Though i have NOC and all other document with me they told me that i don't have paid Road tax so they will bring my bike in police custody and i have to get it back by paying fine. Actualy i don't aware about the process and also i am new for Pune so don't know how to do all this process. I am from Gujarat and Gujarat's Traffic Police are far better then Pune's Traffic Police.

  11. @AndyPat: Hope you paid ur Road tax and njoying ur ride in Pune.
I think the reason behind Mr Nikam asking you about the proof is to know that you recently brought your bike from other state or not.
About paying the Bribe, I can't help much the situation is same everywhere and I believe it's we who promotes it :)

  12. Hi Praveen,

I have the same question which asked by Prashant earlier.
Are you sure that we dont need Local address proof for paying just Road Tax.

Also is there any Affidavit that needs to be submitted as Agent was asking.

    Saurabh Pandey

    ReplyDelete
  13. @Saurabh: Even I mentioned the Local address proof in the list of documents required but I didn't find it compulsory at the RTO as no one asked about it. Also in my case, I went to apply for the Road tax when I just shifted to a house from company accommodation so I believe it may not be necessary. Good to have it, u never know what back fires :)
I was not asked for any affidavit so not much info on that. And yes, no agents so may be no one else asked for such document :)

  14. Hi Pravin,

Thanks yaar, i have paid my roadtax successfully. I want to give few comment based on my experience @ PUNE RTO Office.

I reach at RTO Office with all required document as mention by praveen @ Sharp 10:00AM. I see that no one is come at window 33/34 till 11:30AM. One old lady come @ 11:30 and i show her my FT Form and All document xerox as mention by praveen on above. She try to make me confuse and ask me do i have NOC, I reply i only want to pay Road Tax so why should i have NOC. If you have NOC and you want to pay only RoadTax then never say you have NOC else they will make you more confuse and force you to do registration process also which is not required if you want to stay for short time in pune. Also once you pay Road Tax you can do registration later on within 1 yr from the issue of your NOC data and i suggest you first to pay your RoadTax and then if you feel and required then only do Registratin process because its very lengthy and complex.

After that lady verify all my document he told me to get approval from RTO Officer (Mr.Harishchanra). I went to RTO Officer(Mr.Harishchanra) office and i found its door was closed. I wait for few mins over there and try to ask few people moving around there but don't get any proper reply. After few min one person come to me and ask me what's my problem i say i want to pay RoadTax and for that i need Approval of RTO Officer. He say RTO Officer is on leave today. I got shocked as i have taken leave for the day and officer is not going to come. Then that person told me that he is agent and he will take approval from other officer which cost me Rs.1200. I told him sorry, its not in my budget. Then i wait for 10-15 min and see that RTO Officer's(Mr.Harishchanra) Office is Open. I found one Young Officer inside the office and i request him to give me approval. He check my document and write "Accept Tax" with his signature. So beaware of agents, don't get in there trap.

Then i again go on window 33/34 and show my document to that lady and she calculate the tax based on my bike invoice and tell me to pay tax on window 24/25. I go to window 24/25 and paid my roadtax. It hardly take 30min for all this process.

Its simple process but agents and few employee try to make us confuse.

Please feel your FTFrom with the help of your RC book and your bike insurace policy and just follow above steps mention by Praveen.

If any one need more detail please let me know, i really feel happy to help anyone and want to save time which i have wasted @ RTO Pune.

  18. @drkalpit: The document which indicates the sale of bike with the bike details, amount, dealer and date should be good enough. If the local receipt has these details, I think you are good to go. I think it's valid.

But just 1 Thing... When I went RTO to pay my TAX, RTO Officer asked me: 'Hame kya malum tum kitne time se Pune me Bike chala rahe ho? Aap Bangalore se yaha BIKE lekar aaye to MAHARASHRTA BORDER TAX Receipt dikhao'. I showed him Transport Receipt, But he told me this is for transportation, But Where is MAHARASHTRA BORDER TAX receipt, which you have to pay when you bring any Vehicle to Maharashtra...

RTO Officer is not ready to Approve, without That TAX RECEIPT.. I have never paid any such TAX.. What can I do?

    Please Advice...

    Thanks...

    ReplyDelete
  20. @drkalpit: to whom are u asking ur questions? Just tell them that u got ur bike transported to Maharashtra and want to pay the road tax for the same. show them the transport invoice and that should be enough. This Border tax if needed to be paid should have been paid at the time for transportation itself.

  22. Hey Praveen,

Thanks alot for such a useful blog.

My bike is Karnataka registered and i've moved to pune in may 2011 without NOC as I was told that only paying road tax would be enough to use the bike in Maharashtra. But I had a tough time in getting any help on paying road tax here. Therefore, I hardly used to roam in pune city with my bike. Luckily, I got your blog last weekend while searching for relevant details for the same and went through it. Yesterday, I went to RTO and completed all the formalities within an hr without any agent. Now, I can happily roam around with my bike... thanks again.

  24. Here we go:

    1. Fill up FT form (http://www.rtopune.info/forms/form_ft.pdf) and attach the xerox copies of the documents mentioned by Praveen at the beginning along with an application requesting to accept the road tax for Maharashtra state .

    * It would be better to have local address proof/company joining letter with you so that you can produce it if asked. (I was not asked for the same.)

    2. You need to take approval/acceptance from The Regional Officer RTO, Mr.Harishchanra (Enter RTO main building and take the 1st right...you'll see his office and name).

    3. Once done, you need to meet an old lady (Not sure about the name. May be Mrs Korse as mentioned by Praveen ) who will calculate the road tax applicable for your vehicle. You have to go to 1st floor and then need to go down to catch her.

    4. Now, you need to go to Window no. 23 to pay the road tax. ( You better keep the notes of Rs 100 if possible as if you have notes of Rs 500/1000 then they ask you the write the vehicle no. and your mobile number on them due to lots of duplicate notes available in the market.)

    5. Done!!!

i have shifted from chennai to pune in Nov 2011 and moved my bike to pune in dec 2011.
I have also obtained NOC from chennai RTO but do not want to re register in pune. I have a few questions regarding the road tax payment in pune.

    Thanks in advance !!
Need the info at the earliest.

    Manya

1)Do i need to pay sales tax along with Road tax? My vehicle is 21 months old. Also i have not paid any entry tax for Maharashtra as i shifted my bike with a cargo service.

2)Shd i get the NOC cancelled at chennai RTO to keep my vehicle registered in tamilnadu or it will be already registered in TamilNadu if the NOC gets expired.

    3) As I brought my vehicle in Dec 2011 and have not paid the road tax till date, will there be any penalty in paying Road Tax?

    4) I intend to move back to chennai within 2 years. Can i use my bike after 11 months of paying road tax?

    1. Hi Manu...I hope my reply is still in time :)
      answers to ur queries:
      1) Road tax is all you need to pay along with a interest on the period you shifted your bike to the state.
      2) No need to get the NOC cancelled. Your bike would still be registered in Tamilnadu.
      3) Yes. You need to pay additional amount as interest for the period ur bike entered the state to road tax being payed.
      4) Yup. you can use ur bike in Chennai with the same number.

      cheers..Praveen

  28. Hi, thanks a zetta to all who had contributed their part. Here is my experience at PUNE RTO office.
In that office I met Mr. Gopal dengle,a marvelous man. Sits in the very 1st room on right He handles Road tax payments. He need to authorize after glancing the docs and the letter addressed to RTO officer for OTT(One time tax) aka Road tax. Got his name after meeting another office in 1st floor.
After he signs on the docs, went to a lady clerk from inside only for accessment. Once she puts the value, I went from outside to counter #23. Well both both counters 23 & 24 handle cash payments, but for outside state vehicles, it is 23. I paid the amount and departed from there with the receipt and left the office after Thanking Mr.Gopal.

Let me mention.prior to this I went to Chinchwad office, as I reside in Dhange Chowk. There the officers (2no) are both Real Dodos. After looking my my docs, they said I had to change registration from AP to MH as I got NOC. Which is non-sense. NOC is only a proof saying, vehicle is free of any criminal/accident records. KA RTO does not insist on this NOC for just OTT(road tax). Thanks to Mr.Bhaskar at Chinchwad, who helped me there and later directed me to go to PUNE RTO. For 2009 model HH pleasure worth 42K appx, paid INR 2627 as OTT onc, penalty of INE 323

Do you have a insurance for ur bike? if yes, I believe the insurance guys also calculate the insurance amount on the same funda. If ur insurance copy states the buying price of ur bike then it should be helpful otherwise the RTO officials only can suggest something out.

  37. Hi All,
Thanks to all of you for the valuable informations for which I was able to pay road tax at Chinchwad RTO office without any agent's help.

Let me tell you the detail process
    1. Get all the necessary documents( RC book/Original invoice/License/Insurance/Local Address Proof/Proof of employment /Identity Proof)
    2. FT form filled up.
    3. A plain paper application to the RTO saying that RT officer will allow you to pay tax and allow you to ply your vehicle.
    4. Take all the documents first to ROOM NO 7 where RTO/Dy RTO sits. Take his sign on that plain paper application.
    5. Now take that application to ROOM NO 3 and the person there will mark a stamp sign on your FT application and will charge Rs 10/- for that for which you will get receipt.
    6. Now take this stamped application to ROOM NO 8 and meet Mr.Bhasker who will write a small update on your application and ask your to go to Dy RTO again.
    7. Now again go to ROOM NO 7 and Dy RTO will give his confirmation again on the application.
    8. Once he has approved, go again to ROOM NO 8 where a lady sits right in-front of the door who will evaluate your tax amount depending upon the age of the vehicle and the value on original invoice.
She will charge Rs25/- for that and give you a receipt for that.
    9. Then go to COUNTER NO 1 in ROOM NO 9 ( first counter from right) and pay the amount as written on the application.
    10. By all these times you are holding all the documents with you. Once you have paid the tax, give back all the documents along with tax receipt duplicate copy back to Mr.Bhasker in ROOM NO 8.

    All the best to all.

I would like to update some more info fr the other guys becoz I have submitted my Road Tax today dated 22/01/13.
Firstly know the area/zone where u belong whether in RTO Pune or RTO Chinchwad.
As I am from vishal nagar pimple Nilakh so I belong to RTO Chinchwad zone. I am sharing my experience on the basis of that
      1. All the documents mentioned by Puspak are sufficient additional is the NCRB Form. just type this on google u will get it, just fill the necessary info and its done. Take a print out & add with the other documents.

      2. Now They won't charge u any single penny for stamp or calculation. Its totally free.

      3. And in the last if u don't have NOC then u have to go to Room NO.11 where the submission of road tax was happening without NOC.

Mr. Bhaskar really helped a lot.

Note: If u have smart card for RC he might call u next day, becoz Mr. Bhaskar will check whether ur Bike has NOC or not. So If u have not the NOC then he will allowed u pay the road tax without registration. Else If u have the Manual Book for RC then there is no problem on the same day the whole process will be done.

For OTT or road Tax calculation
they have there own chart, in which they calculate depricated value on the day.
I think for slab of 5-6 years old Vehicle is 76.6% of Invoice + some interest.
This is the principal on which they took 7 % of it + some interest.
So my bike cost was 57940/- its 2007 model 150 DTSI pulsar. My OTT/ road tax is 3360/-.

    1. Hey Aby..First of all..U need to have Invoice or some kind of sale document which shows the amount which you paid for the bike...Check ur insurance doc if it mentions something like this.
Tax Calculation: Tax is calculated based on the original amount of your bike which u paid * a percentage slab which depends on how old is your vehicle. This percentage is mentioned on a sheet of paper at the counter where your road tax amount is calculated...if in doubt..u can ask them to show it to u :)

    2. HI All,

Today, I succesfully paid Road Tax at Sangam Bridge RTO for my AP 2 Wheeler.
I have enclosed FT Form,AT Form,NOC,RC,PUC,Driving License,Rental Agreement with Notary.
First all these documents to be verified by Mrs U.K.Pawar(Asst RTO),but she is not available today and no information is available about her with employees working there. From 11:30 A.M, I was standing there till 2 P.M,but she didn't came
There is a PRO office,a telugu guy was sitting(may be broker, dont know), I asked him when she will come(even he dontknow) and he verified my docs and carried my docs to cabins available beside stairs at main entrance.Go straight in the cabin way and knock the door which is opposite to the cabin entrance, one nice officer was sitting there and he verified docs and asked to me to show original RC and he approved. You need to go to him in absence of Mrs Pawar.

Then you need to meet old lady to get tax amount and then pay amount at window 23 along with approved docs.

      Regards,
      M

    3. Thanks Praveen and every one who shared their experience here. This info really made life easy at the RTO office.

Apart from all the documents mentioned here i had to also submit an affidavit stating my local address and that i do not have an NOC and that i agree to get the NOC and register the bike in Maharashtra if i intended to use my bike more than a year.

I managed to get this affidavit done on a Rs100 stamp from a person who was sitting outside the RTO compound corner(the RTO compound corner towards Le Meridian). He had the content ready printed with him.

      Thanks alot every one

  50. Hi All,

    Thanks for all your inputs.

In addition to the documents mentioned above by Praveen, they need another new document (I was told that it is effective from 1st Sep).
The document is a confirmation that the vehicle is not stolen. You will get it from site http://ncrb.nic.in/
On this site go to Vehicle Enquiry > Select - Status of stolen Vehicle > enter the registration number > and query it up. This will confirm that your vehicle is not registered as stolen in the records.
Take print of that and then its smooth flowing. Don’t ever go to the agents over there, take print out of FT form from the link provided in the blog above, as they many times do not have English form. Fill it up and follow the steps in the blog.

Note – Ask for Ms. Powar (RTO Officer) if you get stuck on where to go, check with her and you will find its just 10 minutes to pay tax as long as you have all the documents

And again thanks to Praveen who started this and am sure lot of us have benefited. ( I saved about 1500/- as I didn’t have to pay the agents). Thanks again!!!!

    Regards

  53. Hi Praveen,

I bought my bike in Bangalore and planning to take it to Pune (probably for less than a year):

    1. Is it OK to just go to Pune and pay road tax for a year without re registration.

    2. If I take NOC from Bangalore and go to Pune, does that cancel my existing registration and road tax that I paid in Bangalore, even if I dont claim for refund later. Hence if I return to Bangalore in less than a year, do I have to pay road tax again in Bangalore ?

    3. What would be the best option regarding registration and road tax if I am staying in Pune for:
    a. less than a year
    b. 2-3 years.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hi Shreyas
      1. Yes. It's OK and I have mentioned the steps for the same in my first post.
      2. NOC doesn't cancel anything automatically. I am not sure about the refund not claim situation but if you get your bike re-registered in Maharahstra and then go back to Karnataka then may be you need to check the procedure at Bangalore RTO.
      3. Pay the Road tax in Pune and keep ur documents with you ..2-3 years is also a minor period to get ur bike re-registered.

Well congrats for your immense support and desire to guide many of us.. well i am based in pune and im buying a RE which is MP registered, Now do i need to register it in pune? (Im am going to use it for long time)Or is it fine if i just pay the OTT and use the bike without registering it?

The seller does not have the invoice so how do i know the value of my bike which is 1995 make. I do not have insurance as well...

Is transferring of ownership would mean registering the bike here? Or can i transfer the bike in my name here in Pune and not register the bike... I guess i have to register the bike in pune (ie get a MH 12 no plate)

    Pls advise, its urgent...

    1. Hi Shaubhik,
Both the options of either paying OTT or re-registering is fine. Depends on what your plans are. If you are going to stay in Pune for long then get ur bike re-registered and yes u'll have an MH-12 number.
The seller not having invoice may be a problem. Try to get some kind of original document which states the sale price of the bike.

    2. Hi Praveen,

Thanks for your help, I have sorted out the invoice thingy.. but a new one has cropped up, as im getting this bike from MP, im supposed to pay OTT ( amt would be somewhere around 3000/-) now i am supposed tp pay green tax as well, the agent (driving school) computed and told that it would be 3200/-.. as far as i know it should be 2000/- for 2 wheelers.. pls see the break up of his fees

      Road Tax 3000/-
      Green Tax 3200/-
      Insurance 530/- (Third Party)
Penalty for break in policy 350/-
      Agent's Fees : 3500/-

Total 10,580/- for transferring the ownership, Road tax payment, green tax and Re registration (MH 12 number plate)

    3. Shaubhik,
Please directly go to the RTO and talk to the specified counter for how much you need to pay. Road tax + Insurance is must but Green tax and agent fees is something which u definitely need to check with RTO.
I don't think u need to pay such a whooping amount of >10K to get ur bike transferred.

  57. Hey!!!paid my 2-wheeler OTT today without Agent..Thnx to praveen and this BLOG..

Pune-RTO realy bad plac i hav evr seen in India. All RTO people wer just****.No one was helpful ther.every where u find Agent n Agent. But only one good Thing is Ms.Powar madam.she was really kind and helpful.

I m trying to describe my journey@RTO today below. I didn't vouch for any agent so had tough time today at the RTO (Near Sangam bridge) ...the main RTO in Pune.As per this blog i went 1st to ms.powar room but it was locked,so my disappointment start from that point.thn i proceeded as per genral people.I asked everyone, how to proceed for tax and visit all over RTO for TAX.then one people suggested me to go window-31,at window-31 one person checked my docs and sent me to another person.don't know his exact name but he was really rude.he checked docs and asked Rent agreement,Police verification and NCRB(National crime Record of my bike,i had nothing from this)he told me to get all things and then come.

Now to start with the documents required(Want to do some change here):
    1) RC Book-1 copy ZEROX with orignal must
    2) Driving License-1 copy must
    3) Active vehicle insurance-1 copy must
    4) Original invoice...this is used to compute the Road tax amount-1 copy must
    5) PUC slip--must
    6) 1 plain paper---not require to write any application
    7) Local proof...Must after bomb blast in Pune.(Rent agreement /police verification/HR letter from company)
8)NCRB--Must (U can find it on google and fill it and take print out,it show that u r vehicle is not stolen one)
9)FT form-must to take sign off on this form Ms.Powar
    10)Trasportation slip--must

    Procedure:
Same as Praveen described in 1st comment, but attached some more Docs.must

    Note:
--Never trust on agent they asked 1200/- to 1800/- for this and will tell lot of things like u need comm.letter, process is very hard,u need 5-6 hrs lots of thing..(if i didn't find powar madam then i was sure ,i would go with agent by paying heavy charge bcs i don't want to waste my another day)
--Directly reach to powar madam with all docs.and tell her about this blogs and tell her that i found your name and all details from online site and make some good conversation with her(will make ur task more easy...:-)))
--If u have rent agreement then well n good other wise some request to mam u need.
--generally Powar mam not in her room on ground floor,so u really need to do hard work to find her in whole RTO.i found her on 1st floor in dep.director office(she is young lady-30-32yrs old may be.she is not RTO but asst.RTO)
--After Signoff from Powar mam go to Window-31,they calculate your tax(mine was 3020/-(2yrs old passion pro))and then pay amount at window-24 and submit all docs.that window.kept orignal receipt with u always and enjoy happy rids without fear of Pune traffic police.....))))))

*****if ur luck is good than it will take hardly 1/2 hr..i spent 4-5 hours due to power mam's room was locked so..

  61. Guys....an update.

I had a 7 year old bike and i paid the lifetime Road Tax for maharashtra. You need following:

    1) Filled F T Form from Pune RTO office website
    2) Residence proof (In my case Rental agreement with Police verification)
    3) NCRB certificate (you will get it online)
    4) Valid Insurance copy
    5) Valid Pollution control (PUC)
    6) RC Copy
    7) Original Invoice Copy

    Procedure:
Go inside the main Building and take the first sharp right turn. Go to one of the Blue doors on the Right side. Get your FT form signed by the Asst RTO officer. Now you need to have it assessed for the total amount which needs to be paid at window 23.

Thats it, it should hardly take 10-15 minutes depending whether the officer is present or not. I went on a saturday and had to wait an hour. The officer arrived after 12PM.

There's a table based computation which happens based on 2 parameters..First, how old is ur bike and Secondly, the price of ur bike. You can get to know the exact amount at RTO itself where there is a counter doing exactly this thing.

  65. Thanks to the blog and everyones comments....That made me pay the road tax here at Chinchwad RTO.

Below is the simple process to follow and pay the tax in minutes.
    1. Documents required(original and photocopy)

    -PUC
    -NCRB report
    -Local and Permanent Address proof
    - Filled FT and AT form(take chasis number marking on the form)
    - An application on plain A4 paper

    2. Take the documents and Application to room no. 7 where Dy. RTO sits. Ask him for his signature.(Time Taken 2 min)
    3. Go to room no. 3 and ask the person sitting on counter for stamp and signature. (Time taken 2 min)
    4. After the stamp, reach room no. 8 , ask for Mr. Bhaskar. He will go through your application and verify the documents with originals. (Time taken 5 min)
    5. Go to room no.7 again and the Dy. RTO will sign the update mentioned by Mr. Bhaskar on your application.(Time taken 2 min.)
    6. Come back to room no. 8 and again meet Mr. Bhaskar, He will then direct you to the person sitting on the right most counter. This person will calculate the tax.(Time taken 15-20 min)

  67. Hi Praveen,

This is Sreedhar and I recently brought my wife's bike from Visakhaptnam to Pune through Rail Parcel service. I have that receipt with me.

Also I have the NOC which I took from Vizag RTO.
Along with the above tow I also have insurance for that bike.

What I'm missing is the Original Invoice. I don't know where my wife dumped it. Now my question is , Is it fine if we bring the duplicate invoice from the bike dealer from which we purchased the bike last year. Also please suggest me how to take the C-Book using this NOC.

Thanks Dude for your excellent post.

    Thanks

    Sreedhar

    ReplyDelete
  68. hi Sreedhar,
A duplicate invoice from the dealer should be good. But again the RTO person calculating the tax should be the best person to confirm the same. The invoice is required to calculate the original amount you paid so it should be enough.

    3. hello Praveen,

As you told that after paying OTT, we can keep vehicle for long time without any re-registration.
But If you see the pune rto website's faq question number 23
( http://www.rtopune.info/faqs.htm ), there is mentioned if we use the other state vehicle in MH for long time then we need to get registration of MH.
Please clear the point on the registration after paying the OTT,For how long can we keep the same registration number in MH after paying OTT?

Please also let me know how to calculate depriciation value of vehicle?
My vehicle cost is 39214rs, i know road tax is 7% of 39214 but what about the depriciation value, if my bike is of 2006 model 125cc discover.

currrently i'm having insurance of my bike is 18000 rs.
from where can i get the total calculation about road tax with depriciate value?

how will it be calculate? will it be (7%ofinvoice - depreciation value)?
      what will be depreciation cost?

      thanks

Do you want to buy 2 wheeler in Hyderabad or in Pune? In Pune, the local address proof (rental agreement) should do. If you planning to buy the 2 wheeler in Hyd, even that is Ok but you need to Xfer the bike and then re-register ur bike Or pay the road tax in Pune.

      Cheers

  72. Hi All,

I have paid Road Tax in Pune successfully without any agent help.

My Bike is :Passion Plus (AP Registration 2006 model)

Here is the required Documnets (xerox) for Road Tax:

    1) FT Form (Please Fill this form before U reaching RTO office)
    2) NOC
    3) PUC
    4) Rental Agreement and Company letter Proof
    5) Invoice bill of the bike
    6) Bike Insurence
    7) Passport and Bike Licence (this is helping us for verifying name in rental agreement)

    Optional:

RC book Xerox (For my case, I have shown NOC (NOC is having both RC and Form 28))

If U don't have Company original letter () then no issue, house rental agreement fine.

Road Tax is : 7% and that too while calculating of this, they will consider year of registration.

For my case: Actual cost is: 41500 , 2006 model calculating (41500*7% + year of registration + some additional tax)

    Finally,I have paid: 2150

    Simple Process:

    1) Go to 27 Window and show ur Documents to him, he asks U abt re-registration then U can tell him only pay road tax then he can ask about NOC original (For my case,he asked it, if U don't have NOC then try it Urself once there)

    2) Go to Asst RTO officer (Vinod Sagra or Kulkarni) and show ur documents to him. If both of them are there in their room then wait for some time and take signature on FT form.
(For my case, no one was there ,so I went to Deshmukh,he verified docs and did his signature on FT form - he is also one office)

    3) Thereafter,Calculating tax : she (old) is seating back of 33 window person, not sure her name

    4) Finally, Go to 23 window for paying Road tax,she verified signature and calculate tax and provode the original receipt and xerox receipt along with Ur all docs.

    Enjoy :)

Very Easy process, don't approach any agent, becaz waste of ur money.

    Regards,
    Arun

    2. Hi Krishna,
The road tax is charged based on the current value of your vehicle , and that depreciated value is there on your current insurance document .

And i would advise that you should not opt for any agents . They are cheats who pose themselves as agents and stand out there at RTO . If you want to go for an agent, then go for the one whom you can track having a proper shop (for eg : Motor Driving learning Centres).
Otherwise , they will take away your money and documents as well .

      Thanks,

I think robber is better than police because he is robber. But police who says they are honest and serving nation, people so & so. They are more dangerous than robber. No more word need to say , you can understand. They have no respect, dignity. They are standing in chowks for making money not for to control traffic. Top to bottom smell of bribe. How their child/ family can grow up in such type of money. Really feel shame.........................

  89. Hello Pravin
Thanks for posting. I have a query. Can I pay the road tax for only 2 years.
I have shifted from Kolkata to Pune recently. I have CBR 250R. Even 7% of Ex-
office showroom price goes to approx Rs 11000, which looks too much.
So, can you tell me if it is possible to pay the tax for short term and not
life time tax? Is the process of paying taxes for short is same as you
    mentioned above?

    1. Hi Mayank,
The road tax is One time tax so it doesn't involve short or long term. But once you are at the RTO, try asking the same question to the person calculating the tax for your bike..may be there is some provision.

  92. Today, I paid my Road tax successfully at Pune RTO(near Pune station). Documents I used -
    1) Form FT
    2) Photocopy of DL, Transfer letter from Company, Police verification as local address proof, ncrb, Insurance, Smart Card.
    3) Written application (not necessary I felt)

Went around 12 pm today. People were already standing outside Mr. Kulkarni's cabin. Every other ARTO was missing. I roamed in the whole RTO building looking for any clue. Finally, I met some other officer and he told that Mr. Kulkarni is on his way. So, I waited for another 20 minutes and finally he arrived. Within 2 minutes, I got his signature.
Then I went near window 32/33 and got the tax calculated on the FT form and then straight to window 23. Got the receipt and walked out of the office happy :).

  94. Hi Praveen/All,

Thanks for all the info and this blog, it helped me a lot in paying just Road Tax for my 1996 Royal Enfield Bullet without NOC from my home state Gujarat ofcourse :). Say, Inform, Argue if asked about NOC that you just want to pay the Road tax and nothing else needed.

I have done this mamoth task in Pune RTO near Sangam Bridge. Total time taken 45 minutes and waiting time for the Asst. RTo officer 3 hours, yeah bad day for me as that guy was busy and got late.

Stay aways from these agents they behave like they are RTO officers and do the magic in seconds, even they will come down and reduce their fees.. Smack them ;)

For all those who asked about Invoice thing. Just get the Quotation for your bike from any showroom (Mine I have got from Bullet Authorised dealer in Pune and tell the Madam (Mrs. Bode) to calculate the tax based on it. Argue if require :).

Latest Procedure as on 25/06/2012 :
    1) Go straight to Window no. 27 , talk to Mr. Kulkarni. Get all the documents described in the blog and even some other Id proof, address proof, most importantly the NCRB certificate
    2) Go to Mr. Madhukar Kulkarni Asst. RTO officer room and get the documents checked and he will write Accept Tax on it. Nowadays he is coming at 1:00 PM (dont know why ??)
    3) Now the hard part. Go to Mrs. Bode to calculate the tax(she is arrogant, but argue if necessary or request, whatever you are best at !! :)). She will pen down the tax on you FT form.
    4) Got to Window No. 23, pay the tax, submit the whole form and xerox get the RECEIPT and Vroom on the roads of Pune with pride...!!! :)

Once again thanks to Praveen and all the people who commented and helped.

    Thanks,

  95. Dear all,

I am very thankful to Praveen and friends who contributed to this blog..This blog helps a lot in avoiding agents and painful service of Government Servants.

I surfed for days looking for information on how to ride by Delhi registered bike in Maharashtra without getting caught by traffic cops, if I don't have NOC.

I will be shifting to Maharashtra on 30th of this month.
I have all the other documents except NOC.

I will try to pay road tax in Nasik, as I have local permanent address proof of this city.

I am moving to Pune from Nasik in second weak of July.

I dont think road tax paid receipt of Nasik will have any problems with Traffic cops, if I ride my bike in Pune, as it is state road tax.

I will update this blog with information from Nasik RTO.

  99. Many thanks to all. I was able to pay Road Tax on 29th June 2013 for my vehicle(Activa) @ Pune RTO office (Sangamwadi).I followed the above steps mentioned by Ankur Desai. As per my experience if you have all the required documents than you may skip step #1 and straightway meet to Assit. RTO Officer Madhukar Kulkarni (seats in Transport Section, Extreme Left Corner,Ground floor)because He is the Authorized person and rest of the Procedure proceed further after his signature.

In my case; when i went to window # 27 & met Mr.Kulkarni; He referred me to meet Mr.Bhople. When I met Mr.Bhople; He asked how long im gona use vehicle & I replied may be 2 to 3 years than He forced me to registered my vehicle as I'm gona use it for more than 1year. He even didn't try to check my documents.I did some argue & than directly went to Assit.RTO Officer cabin.

I carried below documents xerox copies along with FT form
    1) RC Book
    2) Driving License
    3) Active vehicle insurance
    4) PUC slip
    5) NOC (Not necessary but If you have than you might have to do less arguments)
    6) NCRB Certificate (get it from http:// ncrb.gov.in/ > Vehicle Enquiry )
    7) Notarized Rent Agreement + Police Verification copy
    8) Original invoice to compute the Road tax amount (Tax is around 7% of vehile price)

Also carry Passport/Aadhaar Card copies if required than you may provide as one of your identity proof

Request you to stay away from AGENTS & have confidence in you while argue with RTO employees (let them feel that you also aware about RTO Rules & Regulations).

  109. Hi Praveen, thank you so much to consolidate these information Today I went to RTO Pune and paid road tax I want to update it with latest information here.
    documents required:
    1) RC Book
    2) Driving License
    3) Active vehicle insurance
    4) Original invoice xerox bhi chalegi...this is used to compute the Road tax amount. 7% of bike amount printed on invoice(will reduced 7-8% tax amount if bike is 2-3 years old in my case 91 % of 7% tax amount = 2200)
    5) PUC -Poluttion Check slip all our india PUC is valid.
    6) 1 plain paper to write application
    7) Local proof...not compulsory
8)NCRB report-NATIONAL CRIME RECORDS BUREAU download from http://164.100.44.105:8080/ open in IE browser
9)NOC not required for road tax

In case of "change of registration" u need to have NOC of vehicle previous registration. It takes some days before u r handed over the new number.

    Procedure:
Get the xerox copy of all the above mentioned documents (if u haven't, there's a xerox shop in the RTO compound near main gate) and collect a FT document from a store(its free of cost) just outside the main RTO building.
Yogesh Bag) requesting him to approve ur case to file road tax. Take the completed FT form and application to Mr. Yogesh's office (enter RTO main building and take the 1st right...u'll see his office and name). He will sign on the form saying "Accept Tax". then here is catch people told me Mr. Dayma Sir seated back side of counter no 33 or Mrs Bothere Madam will calculate tax. but he/she was not there (I have to wait for 1 hrs as Dayma sir were not there) so another senior person Mr. Kamle at counter no 32 will help you to calculate tax and then route to Mr Nitin Kulkarni counter no 29 who can sign and put validation date and just sign and will ask u to join the queue to pay the road tax at counter no 23(One lady Name Mrs Dhingre sit there very nice nature wise). In my case there is no queue and in 5 min its i paid road tax.

The help window won't be of much help so please don't waste much time there. dont ask to any one might they will be agent and they will route you to wrong. If you face any trouble or some issue at the Office ...Mr. Yogesh is the best person to contact..he sure helps :)

I hope this latest information will help to the reader's who want to pay road tax in pune.

When you renew a road tax, you are renewing a servicing of the taxes that you are paying. The scheme is to fee a uniform tax of 6% of the vehicle’s price .This will be common to all cars and two wheelers

    7) Local proof...not compulsory
8)NCRB report-NATIONAL CRIME RECORDS BUREAU download from http://164.100.44.105:8080/ open in IE browser
9)NOC not required for road tax
    10) FT document to be filled—Compulsory with pencil print of chassis number

In case of "change of registration" u need to have NOC of vehicle previous registration. It takes some days before u r handed over the new number.

    Procedure:
Get the Xerox copy of all the above mentioned documents (if u haven't, there's a xerox shop in the RTO compound near main gate) and collect a FT document from a internet. There will dozens of agents asking u to fill the form on ur behalf...just ignore them. Form is very simple to fill...just copy the details from ur RC book.(The form is in English). After u have copied the details on the FT form from ur RC book, just write an application on the plain paper to the Regional officer RTO (Mr. Yogesh Bag or Mr Tawade(Ast. RTO Officer)) requesting him to approve ur case to file road tax.

Take the completed FT form and application to Mr. Yogesh's office (enter RTO main building and take the 1st right...u'll see his office and name). He will sign on the form saying "Accept Tax". Then here is catch people told me Mr. Dayma Sir(works for only agent) seated back side of counter no 33 or Mrs Bothere Madam will calculate tax and write in FT form. Then got to counter number 23 pay the tax. Enjoy the riding in Maharashtra.

  118. I wish to share my experience of paying Road Tax for my AP regd. Car at RTO vashi (APMC mkt.), Navi Mumbai.
I took the help of a broker (motor training school, paid Rs.1200) however later felt it can be by own.
Copy of following documents were required -
RC, PUC, Insurance, Invoice, Rent Agreement & company appt. letter (for address proof), AAdhaar card (ID proof), FT form and a Letter on white paper (addressed to Dy. RTO) requesting for acceptance of tax.
The broker fixed a day and after taking time-off from my office we went to RTO office carrying all original documents. There the broker asked me to go to Dy. RTO's cabin and get his approval. I went to his cabin with all the documents in hand. He asked me if I’m carrying all original documents and he then scribbled "OTT" on FT form. I handed back the approved documents to broker (all this took 30 minutes) and went back to my office. He then met the concerned clerk in RTO and got the tax amount calculated and written on the FT form.
The tax was calculated at the rate of 9% of Invoice value, then on this depreciation (at 97.2%) plus late payment interest charges.
The next day I made a DD of this amount (above 10K CASH is not accepted) and gave it to broker. He submitted it at RTO cash counter and got me the Tax payment receipt.
From my above experience I feel the work can be easily done without any broker. Only thing is one need to spare time in two days.

  119. I am not sure for how much time i am going to stay in pune. may be 3 years or may be lifelong. Can i continue with my Karnataka Number by paying Road tax in Pune. Or I have to take NOC from Bangalore and Take Maharashtra number. Please kindly help. I am moving to pune within 7 days.

  120. I also have the same question as Saikat Majumder posted...Is paying Road Tax is enough to ride the bike lifelong in Pune or need to change the registration of the vehicle too after specific number of months..?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It totally depends on cop who catches you.According to rule you must get your number changed if you are staying for more than one year in another state. But some cops(not all) are not bothered about this rule and they let you go if you have paid road tax.

  122. Can someone confirm the % of road tax in state of maharashtra? From the official site, I found out that it is 7% of the Invoice amount. But the Shakuntla Madam (pun intended) ;), used to calculate the tax, based it on 9% of invoice - depreciation value of 2.5 years + interest for not filling road tax for 2months (Sept + Oct)...i visited RTO on Nov 16th' 2013

  123. I am planning to re-register my car at the pimpri RTO. I have all the documents viz NOC, RC Book etc.I talked to an agent who asked me to give him CASH and he would deposit the lifetime road tax on my behalf and hand over the receipt to me till such time I get a new number. My question is that would it be safe to hand cash around 30000/- to an agent who can very probably create a fake receipt to me and pocket all the cash which I may never know. Does anyone know of such scam? Pls advise if possible.

    1. Well in my opinion it will not be good idea to handover so much money to your agent.Ask him to get the Road tax calculated first, then at the time of depositing the money you go along with him and yourself deposit the money.Another option is to give him DD instead of cash.

Went to Pimpri Chichwad RTO for Paying Road tax . Its Repeated n times but i am adding one more time for experience sharing.

1 First went to RTO , Next to KSB Chock
2:Go to room number 3 , Here one Tax releted office will sign on your application.
3.Go to Room number 5 , Here one person will write short note on u r application and then will send you to officeres room for sign.
    4. Go to officere room , he is a nice guy and will sign on it ,
    Two question asked ,
A- do u have NOC ? I said i only want to pay road tax
    B- How long u r here ? I said 3 months .
and no further Question asked and he signed with a Smile.
    5. Take back this application to Room number 5 , This time he will make a entry in a rigister and send you back with register and application to officer for sign on register , Officer will sign on register with no problem.
    6. Give back register to room number 5 and Go to Room number 3 here Tax for u r vechicle is calculated.
    7. If u have all the documents ready it will hardly take 10 min ( I did a mistake as i dint have original invoice , so i has to go again to nearby Bajaj showroom there he has given me quotation and i have submitted the same with no prob)
8: After calculation of Tax pay it at Room number 11 , come back with copy to Room number 5 , submit u r doc and it Done.

    1. Sure you dont need NOC.
In RTO they will ask if you have your NOC with you. Say confidently that I dont apply for NOC.

An address proof is required. In my case company offer letter was not sufficient and they asked me to get an affidavid saying that 'As of now I have only company offer letter as address proof'

  127. Successfully deposited road tax in CHinchwad RTO in JAN 2014

Only strange thing that I was asked is movers packers receipt by which I have bring bike to Pune in room where they calculate road tax. (Someone have also mentioned same in his comment in Pune RTO)
He will say "How can we find since how long you are using your bike in Pune. This money wont come in our pocket. You will get receipt for it."

But after lots of requesting I was managed to get the road tax amount.

I know this is frustrating but be prepared for this.

Here is one catch. Make sure your PUC slip date should be after the date that you are saying to officer.

  129. Yo Guys! You all rock. This is the power of Blogging.
Today I paid road tax for my AP registered vehicle in PUNE RTO. I am listing the process followed for other's convenience.

    1. When I was entering the RTO compound, lot of agents tried to call me, but I simply neglected them.
    2. As and when entered into RTO office, I took the first right. There is a room immediately on to the right side where Mr. "Yogesh Baag", the Asst RTO sits. I went directly into his cabin and stood there.
    3. I was made to wait for 5-10 mins, because he was talking with somebody else. Continuing his conversation, Yogesh to documents from me, verified and mentioned "Accept OTT from 01/03/2014" and suggested me to go to Counter No: 32.
    4. Counter No: 32, This is the place where the tax for your vehicle is calculated. Mr. "Ghanshyam.J" sits here. There are few sideway entries... (I think agents) who killed some time. Luckly its not more than 5 minutes for me.
    5. Ghanshyam took my papers and asked me for NOC. I said I have no NOC and also mentioned that the vehicle will go back to parent state within 5-6 months (Lol... I think you people can understand. Once I pay the tax, I can run the vehicle for lifetime).
    6. Tax Calculation as follows:
    a. 7% of your vehicle invoice amount.
    b. Depending on the age of the vehicle, the tax amount is calculated. In my case, my vehicle is 10-11 years old. So the tax is 46.8% of (7% of vehicle invoice amount)
    c. Then there is a service tax (I think so)… around 20/-
    d. The actual tax amount you have to pay is (b)+(c).
    7. It took hardly 2-3 minutes for him to calculate the tax. Then told me to go to Counter No: 23.
    8. Counter No: 23, Here a lady (Around 30-35 Yrs, Name not known) collected the Tax and gave me the Tax receipt. Also she suggested me to take 3-4 copies of Xerox and get the original laminated.
    9. After collected the tax paid receipt, went back to Yogesh Baag’s (Asst RTO) chamber, thanked him and happily returned from RTO.
It hardly took me 30-35 mins (including waiting times) in RTO office.
Purely because of this blog, I was able to pay the tax without any agent’s help. So, Thank you all again. Bigger pie of credit goes to Praveen and the remaining pies to all the other contributors.

  131. Hi Praveen,

Thanks a lot for this useful piece of information..

I am planning to move my 2005 Discover 125 dtsi (Ahmedabad GJ-01 registered) bike to Pune via a transport service..

I need clarifications on the following points:

    1. I am planning to use this bike in Pune for 3-4 years. Will it be fine to run the bike by just paying the road tax? Will the traffic police (if they catch me seeing the Gujarat number plate) accept the tax receipt and let me go? Is it fine if i do not register my bike in the Pune RTO?
    2. The bike is registered under my father's name (Name in the RC book). Will this have any impact on paying the road tax in Pune?
    3. My bike has not been insured since 2006 (a year since its purchase). Will it have any impact now when i purchase a new insurance term for my bike?
    4. Do i need a local address proof in Pune? I currently do not have any Pune address proof..
    5. Is a NOC (from Gujarat) needed to pay the road tax in Pune?

  132. I m nt able to open the Vehicle Enquiry option from the "http://ncrb.nic.in/" link..

it gives me the following error:

"Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to 164.100.44.112
Access a cached copy of 164.100.44.112/vahansamanvay/Internetquery.aspx"

  133. Thank you Praveen for great information shared here. It was really helpful before and while m doing road tax procedure at pune RTO. I had lil bad experience faced their. They provided me the FT form in Marathi, when i asked for Hindi or English they simply told to take help from RTO agents. But I stuck to your blog and get English form of same format. \m/ I matched the fields and filled it successfully. Else was same as you mentioned. Only NCRB was missing , which was managed by my android phone (i filled it their and took its print from near by shop). And now m roaming in whole Pune like 'bindaas'

    Cheers
    Kash.
